The DEFA versions of "Snow White" and "The Devil with the Three Golden Hairs" were similar in acting forms. Both had stilted and outrageous acting styles. However, it seemed that "The Devil with the Three Golden Hairs" was even more outlandish in style that "Snow White". Also, the "Snow White" version seemed to follow the story line of the original Brothers Grimm more closely than "The Devil with the Three Golden Hairs" did. "The Devil with the Three Golden Hairs" had random storylines and additions (like the castle being deep underground and the existence of the robber tax) that were not in the German literary tale.

I agree with you on both counts - the acting styles in the films were outlandish and outrageous to an extent and the film version of "Snow White" did follow the story line of the original Brothers Grimm more closely than the film version of "The Devil with Three Golden Hairs." I'm assuming it was done to add more depth and comedy to the story both for the sake of running time (otherwise the film would have been really short) and simple amusement.
ReplyDeleteI also wonder which was made first "Snow White" or "The Devil with the Three Golden Hairs". Did DEFA experiment more with the Devil movie because it was made after "Snow White" and the film company had more experience with the type of story they wanted to tell?
